A participatory Deaf-led dance rave party for children.
Anna Seymour was commissioned by Melbourne Fringe Festival to create a version of SPIN for children for the 2019 Melbourne Fringe Festival. SPIN was presented at the 2018 Melbourne Fringe Festival and won the SPIRIT OF THE FRINGE award.
Mini SPIN is an adaptation of SPIN, specifically for Deaf, CODA (Children Of Deaf Adults) and hearing children and their families. Mini SPIN is an interactive, immersive Deaf-led dance rave incorporating Deaf culture, stories and heaps of dancing!
Mini SPIN involves the same Deaf Hosts from SPIN; Anna Seymour, Luke King and Robbie Burrows and DJ be kind to other people (Callum Padgham) who also featured in SPIN.
Mini SPIN was presented at the Kids Club of the 2019 Melbourne Fringe Festival to sell-out audiences (50 children and 48 adults) and Bendigo Deaf Hub in December 2019. Mini SPIN has been programmed by Darebin Arts for their Speakeasy 2020 Program (March 14 & 15).
Our family went to the Kids Club: Mini SPIN earlier today and we LOVED it. We are really hoping it will happen again next year. Thanks for having such a great show/activity.

Audience & Marketing Notes
Mini SPIN is specifically for Deaf, hard of hearing, CODA and hearing children and their families aged between 5 and 12 years old and we are particularly interested in the regional and rural areas of Victoria. Mini SPIN is unique as it is a completely Deaf-led dance rave that is interactive, immersive, funny and energetic for all ages. It interweaves short theatre skits and stories about Deaf culture and how we may experience music and dancing in different ways.
A dance party led by Deaf Hosts isn’t something many people have heard of, or even consider. Mini SPIN provides a safe space for Deaf, hard of hearing, CODA and hearing children to come together and to connect with each other through dance and movement. Deaf children often are not exposed to dance and movement because their families don’t think music and dance is something that Deaf people can do or access.
Deaf children would benefit enormously from Mini SPIN with the Deaf Hosts as strong, positive role models. CODA children will be able to participate in a dance party where their language and culture is dominant – which is very rare for CODAS. Hearing children would be able to access entry in a whole new world.
